CYPRES - Maintenance Info 1/96
Recently we have come to realise that there is a lack of
clarity about the 4 year maintenance of the Cypres. Possibly
the expression "4 year check" introduced by us has
also contributed to this. Therefore, we would like to give
some explanations.
The maintenance of the Cypres cannot be compared to a
usual regular cycle check, e.g. on a car.
Sometimes we receive Cypres units 5 to 6 months before
their actual maintenance date. In these case we unfortunately
have to inform the customers that we cannot carry out the
maintenance right at that time, but only when it is really
due. This is no abitraryness of us but has technical reasons.
The maintenance of a Cypres should generally be carried out
at the fixed date, i.e. the first time being 4 years after
manufacture. As in practice it is hard to meet this date
precisely, we have agreed on a flexible time span of
plus/minus 3 months.
Why can't the maintenance be carried out more than 3
months before it is due?
For the maintenance, we do not only check
the complete electronics of the device for correct function,
but we also compare the measured data of the single unit with
data of other units from the same manufacture period. The
reason for this is that the data of a single unit could show
no deviations but, compared with other units, it could show
deviations which could lead to more comprehensive tests. This
statistical procedure which should guarantee the high quality
standard of the Cypres, requires that the date of the
maintenance is met precisely.
If a unit is returned for maintenance after the due
date, why is it then not valid for 4 full years, but only
until date of manufacture plus 8 years?
Although we will still do maintenance on
units which we receive after their due date, the maintenance
validity - because of the reason mentioned above - is not 4
full years but only until the next regular maintenance date,
i.e. date of manufacture plus four years, eight years, etc.
Because, in such cases we do not have the according
comparison data, we cannot judge the long term behaviour of
the unit in question. So, we only can release it until the
next maintenance due date.
As a Cypres is a life saving device, we do not want to
accept any possible risk.
Therefore: Please return units 4 years after date of
manufacture (this can be found on the silver processing unit
label) plus/minus 3 months.
CYPRES - 4 Year Check Info 12/95
When is it required to send a CYPRES for the
4-year-check?
CYPRES needs to be returned four years from the original
date of manufacture as stated on the unit label. A
"window" of plus/minus three months is allowed to
enable this to be done when it is most convenient, as in
during the "off season" or when the rig will not be
in use. Note that there is no advantage or disadvantage to
sending it in up to 3 months early or 3 months late - it is
the same price, and the identical "next required"
inspection date: all based on the month and year of original
unit manufacture.
What is performed?
- All cables are visually and electrically inspected
for wear or damage.
- The plastic processing unit case is split apart and the
internal metallic electro magnetic shielding unsoldered and
removed.
- The unit is subjected to heat and cold tests and is being
tested up to extreme areas.
- The technical data is compared with that from the
original production phase. Any deviations or discrepancies
are analysed and appropriate action taken.
- The unit is subjected to simulated conditions which cause
it to activate, thus testing the activation programming and
data (electronic cycle, precise duration and magnitude of
ignition impulse etc.).
- The power consumption during various function phases is
tested.
- The cutters are checked electrically.
- Any applicable updates (technical improvements) will be
performed.
Please note: It is technically impossible to incorporate
a plug connection in an existing plug-less cutter.
How long does the 4 year check take?
Approximately 2 weeks after receipt of the unit.

Is there a visual sign indicating the 4 year check has
been performed?
At the side of the CYPRES there is a seal: "Airtec Check 199X"
(A CYPRES manufactured 1991 gets the "Airtec Check
1995" seal, even if it is returned for maintenance in
1996. A CYPRES manufactured 1992 gets the "Airtec Check
1996" seal, even it is already returned for maintenance
in late 1995.)
In connection with the maintenance the CYPRES battery
only will be replaced if its life time is up, or ends prior
to the next repack. This would not be included in the
4-year-check price.

Please note that all batteries, which are 2 years or
longer in a CYPRES, must be replaced.
